Restore your cutting board

A proper restoration is more than simply adding oil. Follow these steps to smooth the surface, raise and remove loose wood fibres, replenish the timber and protect it with our beeswax balm.

The same process can be used across wooden kitchenware — from serving boards to spoons and utensils. Clean and dry thoroughly, smooth the timber, condition with Wood Oil, then finish with the Kitchen Wood Balm.

1. Clean the board

Wash the board with warm, soapy water to remove food residue, grease and surface dirt. Do not soak the board. Rinse, wipe clean and allow it to dry completely before sanding.

2. Sand away wear

Using the sanding block and 120 grit paper, sand with the grain of the timber. Work evenly across the surface to smooth knife marks, rough patches and minor nicks.

3. Raise the wood grain

After the first sand with 120 grit, wipe the surface thoroughly with a clean damp cloth. This removes sanding dust while also raising tiny wood fibres that have been flattened during sanding.

Don’t skip this step — it helps create a noticeably smoother final surface.

4. Finish sand & remove the dust

Once the raised fibres have dried, sand the board again using the fine 240 grit sandpaper supplied. Sand with the grain until the surface feels smooth to the touch.

Brush away all sanding dust. For best results, we also recommend using an air blower or a hair dryer on the cool setting to clear any fine dust trapped in the grain and grooves.

5. Replenish with wood oil

Apply the Wood Oil generously over the entire board — front, back, edges and grooves.

Use a brush or gloved hand to work the oil evenly into the timber, then leave the board overnight so the oil can penetrate deeply.

After approximately 24 hours, wipe away any oil remaining on the surface that the timber has not absorbed.

6. Finish with beeswax balm

Using the supplied foam applicator, work a thin, even layer of Wallace Run Beeswax Wood Balm over the board.

Buff away any excess with a paper towel and your board is restored — smooth, replenished and ready for many more meals.
